This five-year-old Akita has a rare autoimmune disease. She also has a skin disease called Uveodermatologic syndrome. This means that her body attacks the melanin of the skin around her face.
Her condition caused her to go completely blind. Other dogs with this condition can go blind like Zoey or develop severe glaucoma.
Her condition would also cause her to develop painful ulcers when she is exposed to sunlight. Zoey would need a particular sunscreen and balm for her skin and nose when she goes out.
Zoey would also need to wear special goggles as her eyes are susceptible to light. Zoey’s previous owners used to manage her condition with medication. Unfortunately, he had to go to hospice, and no one was left to take care of Zoey.
Together with her best friend, Zoey was sent to a shelter. Since her best friend was young and healthy, she was adopted immediately. Zoey was left alone in an unfamiliar place. Zoey’s situation broke Tracy’s heart. Tracy, who owns an animal rescue, has a soft spot for special needs dogs.
Tracy took pity on Zoey and decided to help her out. Tracy cared for Zoey and even had her assessed by a dermatologist. Tracy is now looking for the right family to take care of Zoey.
She is looking for a family that lives nearby. This is so Zoey can continue her relationship with her dermatologist. Tracy even offered for her organization to pay for Zoey’s medication and other needs.
Tracy just wants to find a family who is willing to give Zoey their time. That’s all Zoey truly needs. A family that she can belong to.
Tracy has been her family, and she is happy with what Tracy and her organization have done for her. But it was time to let her go. It is a bittersweet moment, but Zoey needs to belong to a family.
