It’s not really a big secret that the Border Collie is one of the best herding dogs in existence. These pups are so smart that a Border Collie named Chaser, held the title “world’s smartest dog.” Unfortunately, Chaser passed away last year. But it wouldn’t be surprising if the one who replaces her is from the same breed.
She was well known for her memorization skills, but on top of that, she was able to use a little bit of logic when she was tested. However, Chaser was one in a million, and not too many dogs have her mental abilities. But one thing is for certain; Border Collies are the best at herding animals.
At a local country fair in Cookeville, Tennessee, a team of Border Collies has reassured the world that they are still the best. Their humans, Candy and Chad Collins, showcased their herding skills in a cute, but challenging way. They were tasked to herd a small group of ducks into a hula hoop.
Certainly, herding is just second nature to these pups. They herd different animals on a daily basis like sheep, cattle, and yes, even ducks. This was they were bred for, and this is where they excel. But with the small hula hoop, this became interesting for us, spectators.
The exhibition was set up in the middle of a dirt road at the Putnam County Fair. Chad was coaching and signaling the pups, while his wife Candy recorded the show on her phone. Slowly but surely, the three Border Collies named, Lass, Celt, and Roy coaxed the ducks towards the hoop.
The dogs were showing perfect teamwork. After one of them has moved to herd the ducks, they would then crouch and stay still not to spook the birds and disrupt the team’s progress. It only took a minute and a half, and when all of the ducks were inside the hula hoop, the crowd gave them a round of applause.
