Eight amazing Labrador retrievers went on an unforgettable trip. These eight doggos work for the group Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which is a group that provides free guide dogs to those who need them.
Commercial flights were canceled during the pandemic, so the organizers of the trip had to be inventive. It ended with making an extended road trip through the states of Ohio, Illinois, and Colorado!
Indeed, this was an interesting journey! A recreational vehicle equipped with customized crates had been used to transport the dogs to ensure that they were comfy while traveling. At each stop that they make, a few of the dogs met with some foster volunteers, ensuring that they were well and could continue their guide dog training.
It is also amazing that six of the dogs have completed their harness training and have found their way to their foster families who lived in Colorado and Ohio. There, the dogs were collected by a trainer. The other two dogs were actually the first youth program dog for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
People cannot get enough of the participating canines as they followed their journey online. A photo of them was uploaded to Facebook, where it earned over 1k likes and was shared hundreds of times.
During the pandemic, Guiding Eyes for the Blind was not the only charity that encountered difficulties with animal travel and logistics. Big Dog Rescue Ranch, a dog rescue organization that is located in Florida, also had to undergo changes in an attempt to adapt to the circumstances. This charity has been raising awareness about the canines in Puerto Rico that are in need of assistance.
Another group, the Santuario Canita in Puerto Rico was able to charter two cargo flights to transport 250 dogs. This was made possible by Big Dog Rescue Ranch’s GoFundMe page, via which they were able to raise $50,000.
