Many dogs can swim, but it’s hard to predict how long they can swim in water. If you see a dog swimming without any supervision in a river, sea, or lake, it may need help. Recently, a dog was seen swimming in the cold waters of New York’s Hudson River. This was concerning, as the dog was alone and appeared to be struggling to stay afloat. Fortunately, volunteer firefighters were able to rescue the dog and bring it to safety. This is the incredible story of the brave pooch’s swim in the Hudson River.
The dog in the Hudson River
The Edgewater Fire Department in New York recently received a call about a dog named Bear who was in danger. It was reported that the dog was swimming under a pier in Independence Harbor. Volunteer firefighters quickly responded to the scene to rescue the dog. Two of them went into the water to make Bear swim toward the boat where another firefighter was waiting to grab him.
Thankfully, Bear was eventually reunited with his family. Ellen Wolpin, Bear’s owner, told a news outlet that they had only gotten the dog a week before the incident for their son with unique needs. They were actually buying Bear a harness when he escaped and jumped into the river.
Although Bear’s breed, a mix of Bernese Mountain Dog and Leonberger Bernese, is known to thrive in cold weather, his family was anxious and scared that he was gone for good after the initial search operation yielded no results.
Bear is now safe
After being reunited with his family, Bear received a comforting bath and was taken to the vet for a thorough check-up. To ensure that a similar incident doesn’t happen again, Bear’s family provided him with extra harnesses. This story of Bear serves as a reminder to all dog owners to keep a close eye on their furry friends and ensure that they are always on a leash. This will prevent dogs from accidentally entering bodies of water and from getting into fights with other dogs.
