Although all dogs have a natural talent for tracking through scent, not all of them are cut out to make a career with it. Like us, their personalities and inclinations also factor in what profession is best suited for each dog. Some may be great as house pets, while others find their place as service dogs or even trackers. There is this one pooch who had to fail in one career to find another one that was perfect for him in every way.
Train in training
A Retriever named Train began his next chapter in life when he was rescued by the Chesapeake Bay police K9 trainers. The academy hoped to teach him the tools that would help him become a police detection dog. However, even though his nose was perfectly suited for tracking, the pooch was simply not interested in pursuing this career path.
As a result, Train wasn’t able to pass his training due to being overly energetic, which made him unqualified for the job. After a lifetime of abuse and now this failure, there was a moment of uncertainty about him finding where he belonged. Luckily, Karen DeMatteo came into the dog’s life.
Sniffing for research
Karen was a conservation biologist in search of detection dogs to join her team in a research project she was about to conduct at Misiones, Argentina. Although Train failed the doggie police academy, the skills in tracking and odor detection he learned were still highly developed. This, coupled with his high energy, was the perfect combination of things that made this dog perfect for the job.
The data that Train has helped Karen and her team collected was incredible. The hyper pooch was able to cover over 600 miles of the Argentinian forest sniffing and tracking the entire route in just his first year!
